Zones for enjoying a picnic in Cabo de Gata

The spectacular Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park is one of the best places in the south of Spain for enjoying the sun and other plans in the great outdoors. If you love nature then you will feel right at home here, surrounded by precious coves where you can swim, alongside people from all over, and enjoy a family picnic, underneath the shade of the Mediterranean pine trees.

38,000 hectares hide beaches like those of Los Genoveses, Mosul, Arco, Playazo, Playa de Agua Amarga and Playa de San José which are perfect for going swimming with the kids, practicing water sports or basking in the sun. You can also visit some of the most beautiful and picturesque towns in Andalusia which are ideal for discovering the most authentic cuisine and residing culture of the Mediterranean coast.

Away from the urban zones, you can discover countrysides like Nazareno which is located 7 km away from the municipality of San José. This zone offers both flat and mountainous areas for going hiking or eating outside in the middle of the typical vegetation of this zone in Almeria.

The salt lakes are also worth a family day out; walking around one of the wetlands most coveted by vegetation and fauna on the coast of Almeria. The colours are spectacular and are reflected on the lakes during sunset. Plus, there are many zones where hikers can stop and enjoy a picnic whilst being surrounded by nature. The best zone for promenading is between San Miguel and La Fabriquilla beaches.

The lighthouse is one of the most visited sights during the summer months especially as it is one of the most symbolic spots on the Cabo de Gata coast for enjoying alternative leisure activities. For example, kayaking routes for admiring the entire coastline from the sea, nearby beaches and views that are some of the best on the coast.

From Roquetas de Mar, where our Protur Roquetas Hotel & Spa is located, you can get to the natural park in about an hour by car. We recommend setting off early in the morning so you can enjoy a full day of driving along and enjoying the different routes and coves within this unique natural setting and then come back after sunset. The roads are in good condition and, if you choose not to bring your own car, our reception staff can offer you advice on how to get the best rental car rates.
