Gastronomy is one of the main attractions of Majorca. It is the perfect location to enjoy the best products of the Mediterranean diet. On the island, you can try all types of traditional dishes made essentially with vegetables, fish and meat, but there are several dishes that stand out and that you should not forget to include in your holiday menu. Here are some of the most popular dishes.
Pica – Pica.- It is one of the most classic tapas dishes that can be ordered at a traditional Majorcan cuisine restaurant. The key ingredients are cuttlefish -one of the most used ingredients in local gastronomy, and tomato, with which they elaborate a type of stew, with a lot of sauce, perfect to dip with the typical Majorcan brown bread as a snack before eating.
Lechona.- baked in the oven or grilled, suckling pig is one of the great traditional dishes of Majorca. There are specialised grill houses throughout the island specialised in this delicious dish, perfect for a special day and ideal for sharing with friends and family.
Coca de verduras.- You will find it in almost all traditional bakeries of the island. It is a kind of pizza, with a very thin dough covered with vegetables typical from the Majorcan vegetable garden (there are many different types including spinach and tomato, peppers -the most common-, eggplant and zucchini…) which is formed into rectangle and then cut into square pieces and served in individual units. Perfect to eat between meals as a snack or to take with you on a picnic.
Trampó.- If there is a typical Majorcan salad, this is definitely the trempó or trampó salad. It is a mixture of tomatoes, Majorcan peppers and onions cut in dices, seasoned with a little garlic, olive oil and vinegar making it the perfect dish to combat the summer’s heat. Fresh, simple and full of flavour. In some restaurants it is also served with tuna, to make it a complete meal.
Frito Mallorquin.- A very tasty dish which combines the powerful flavours such as the liver, kidneys and other pork meat cuts with potato, cauliflower and peppers, cut into small cubes and sprinkled with fennel, whole garlic with olive oil and laurel.
