A tour round the castles of Majorca

Majorca has much more to offer than its beaches and the sun. It is also home to an incredible mountain range dotted with typical charming villages and unique cultural heritage that allows us to travel back in time and discover the history of this magical place. To explore this properly we, at Protur Hotels, recommend touring around all the most interesting and well-conserved castles of Majorca.

Castle of Bellver.- This is located in Palma, the island’s capital and it is one of the most interesting castles on the island. In the past it was a prison and now it is the place to host all kinds of events and celebrations: from music concerts to theatre plays. What attracts visitors most though are the incredible views of the bay of Palma, as the castle is situated on a small hill on the west side of the city, just above the sea.

Castle of Alaró.- This is one of the most visited and famous castles in Majorca as, in addition to its beauty and incredible views of the island’s interior landscapes, it is also perfect for hiking. Surrounded by lush nature, the incline is very steep but trust us, it is worth it when you get to the top. Do not forget your camera as you will definitely regret it if you do not bring it.

Castle of Capdepera. This is a historic castle that is very well conserved and located in the highest zone of the village of Capdepera. In addition to the incredible views it offers, this peaceful place becomes the focus of everything once a year (in May) during the large medieval market in which the entire town takes part to travel back in time and see first-hand what Majorca was like in the Middle Ages.

Castle of Santueri. This castle is the closest to our hotels in Majorca. This is a huge castle located in the mountains of the Serra de Llevant in the municipality of Felanitx. It is considered the best place to look out over the southeast coast of the island and is the place where numerous civilisations were formed and conquests took place: Arabic, Roman and Byzantine…

Castle of the Rey.- This is located in Valle de Ternelles, in Pollensa, in the north of the island. It is currently in ruins with only a few stones left to resemble the defense towers, however if you think of the castles of Alarò and Santueri, you will be able to imagine what it was like as it used to bear a similar resemblance to these. Although the road leading to it is for public use, there are also a few restricted areas.
